03Reading beauty products honestly

The active ingredient and its concentration matter far more than the brand or the packaging. A serum listing that names its actives and their percentages is being straight with you. One that talks about complexes and blends without numbers usually has very little of anything active in it.

Check the size against the price rather than the price alone. Beauty is the category where a small bottle at a low price is routinely worse value than a larger one that costs more, and listings do not make the comparison easy.

Anything containing vitamin C, retinol or an oil degrades with light and air. An opaque bottle with a pump beats a clear jar, regardless of what the formulation claims.

Reviews in this category need reading with more care than most. Skin responses vary enormously, so a small number of bad reviews is normal and not a red flag. A pattern of reviews describing the same specific reaction is.

04What a discount percentage actually means

The percentage you see is calculated against a list price that the seller sets. It is not independently audited. A seller can set a high list price, sell at the real price, and show a permanent discount that never actually changes.

This is why a 70% saving is often less impressive than a 25% one. The honest check takes about ten seconds: paste the product URL into CamelCamelCamel or Keepa and look at what the item has genuinely sold for over the past few months. If today's price sits near the bottom of that line, the deal is real.

Two patterns are worth being suspicious of. First, a discount that has been running for weeks without change, which usually means the list price is fiction. Second, a deep cut on a brand with no history and a flood of short, similar-sounding reviews.

05Before you buy: the boring checks that save money

Confirm who is actually selling. 'Ships from and sold by Amazon' or 'Fulfilled by Amazon' from an established seller gives you Amazon's returns process. A third-party seller shipping directly may have their own terms, and recovering money is slower.

Look for a clippable coupon under the price. It is a checkbox that takes a further amount off at checkout, it stacks with the discount already shown, and it is the single most commonly missed saving on the site.

Sort the reviews by most recent rather than reading the top ones. A four-and-a-half star average built three years ago tells you nothing about the unit shipping today, particularly in categories where sellers change suppliers between production runs.
